Donna and Joe have finished their assignment in India. Occasionally they still travel somewhere.

Right of Way II

I took this picture while waiting to cross the Outer Ring road, the closest thing Bangalore has to an expressway. Obviously it's not an express way because traffic has to stop every kilometer or two for lights at intersections like this. But it has a service road running down either side and between intersections traffic sometimes reaches speeds of 80 kph(50mph). While I and the rest of the traffic were waiting for the light this lady and cow walked up the road from behind us (using the right side of the road since the left was full of waiting traffic and without any hesitation walked across the outer ring road. All traffic in both direction stopped and waited for them to cross, then resumed. The second picture is just a piece of the first one enlarged so you can see the woman and cow more clearly.

Right of Way

In India a cow always has the right of way. So that brings my list of traffic rules that are consistently obeyed in Bangalore to four.

Rule #4: The cow has the right of way.

This is a busy intersection in the downtown shopping area of Bangalore. We are waiting for the light to change, but the cow is simply making its way from here to there at a leisurely pace. Traffic on the cross street, which had the green light, flowed around the calf as she crossed that street. It then made its way up the street moving between the cars without a care in the world.

Window Shopping

Another lost picture moment:
Riding around town one day I noticed a cow standing on the sidewalk, but not parallel to the road like usual. Indeed, she stood facing away from the road, her nose inches away from the brightly-lit window of a woman's clothing shop--No doubt planning her spring wardrobe. Cows in Vermont, eat your hearts out. (They have to settle for the L.L. Bean catalog!)
